Bishop's Corner | Shannon Sharpe | Racism Trauma

Racism trauma—also known as racial trauma or race-based traumatic stress—refers to the psychological and emotional harm caused by direct or indirect experiences of racism. It can affect individuals and communities across generations and is recognized as a real and serious form of trauma.

Key Features of Racism Trauma:

Source of Trauma:

Direct experiences: verbal abuse, discrimination, hate crimes, police brutality, etc.

Indirect experiences: witnessing racism against others, systemic inequalities, media coverage of racial violence.

Historical/Intergenerational trauma: the lingering effects of slavery, colonization, segregation, and ongoing marginalization.

Symptoms (can mirror PTSD):

Hypervigilance (constantly feeling unsafe or on edge)

Anxiety or depression

Sleep issues or nightmares

Anger or numbness

Avoidance of certain places or people

Low self-esteem or internalized racism

Impact Areas:

Mental and physical health

Academic and job performance

Personal relationships

Identity and self-worth

Who It Affects:

While anyone can experience or witness racism, people from racially marginalized groups—especially Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC)—are most at risk.

Therapy (especially culturally competent or trauma-informed care)

Community support and activism

Spiritual or cultural practices

Education and storytelling (breaking silence)
